I am so glad that it came back to me and I immediately wanted to return to the library to get The Farseers Trilogy by Robin Hobb and reread it … again: Assassin's Apprentice; Royal Assassin; Assassin's Quest. I'm referring to FitzChivalry Farseer, hero (anti-hero, really) of Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy. The first, Assassin's Apprentice – tackled many of the same ideas and broad 'coming of age' themes as Rowling. It consists of three books: Fool's Errand (ISBN 0-00-648601-0), The Golden Fool (ISBN 0-00-648602-9) and Fool's Fate (ISBN 0-00-648603-7). Awards Nominated: British Fantasy Society Award. I mean, you' re of course quite right that “fitz” means “son of” in (for lack of a better word) this universe, but my impression of it in the Farseer universe was always pejorative; I never had the idea that Verity overlooked Fitz's illegitimacy. I bring this up in particular because the first trilogy (Farseer, consisting of Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin's Quest) suits itself particularly well to teens looking to break away from Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings but don't There's an excellent reason for all of Fitz's suffering, though it's never fully explained until later in the trilogy (and this reason leads to one of the best cathartic moments I've read in fantasy at the end of the Tawny Man books). Although That's right, our favourite assassin from The Farseer Trilogy which we first met in Assassin's Apprentice is our main character once again. At the very Honestly, the Harry Potter books don't particularly have a strong appeal for me, though I have seen and enjoyed a few of the earlier movies. But I kept having to remind myself that he was still just a boy in this book – by the end of this first part of the trilogy he is not in this country and time period of an age to vote, drink, or serve in the armed forces.
